WMCB-LP Updates Local Show Schedule

Radio committee votes to remove all week-day repeats and revamp weekend repeat playlist

After a close inspection in June of the radio show schedule at that time, and reviewing the frequency that shows have been repeating, all week-day 6:00 am to 12:00 midnight show repeats have been removed. This creates room in the schedule for new local shows to be aired, as well as public service announcements and "shout outs" from the listening community. This is a first for WMCB-LP, which had been broadcasting mostly repeats at 107.9 FM since May of 2008.

Additionally, a technical report was developed to review show consistency and categories. The top 32 hours of the freshest most consistent shows were chosen to be repeated and placed in cohort-focused grouping on weekends, 8:00 AM to 12:00 midnight, such as a talk block starting off Saturday mornings, followed by gentle song shows, then medium, then punk and thrash, going to dance and pop-oriented in the evening. Sundays has a more even-tempered line-up of repeats throughout the day, all repeats of the previous week's shows. This is a work in progress and may be updated in the coming weeks.

In an effort to bring in morning radio listeners who don't want to listen to commercial radio or want to hear more about what's going on in Greenfield, a new Monday to Friday, 6:00 to 9:00 am "morning block" was created to play songs strictly from the Jazler library, which is managed by the DJs, intermingled with local PSAs and shout-outs. Please try tuning in each weekday morning to hear how this works. We are still experimenting with this feature, and there are definitely a couple bumps on our road to success. This PSA-ladened scheduling concept will extend into the 10:00 - midnight schedule as well, peeking through the gaps between your shows.

This new approach to the on-air schedule is driven by a desire to reduce the amount of repeat shows a listener may encounter on 107.9 FM, and to also get more people "in the door", so to speak, including the listening audience at large, who for the first time has the ability to send us PSA content via email. We expect every DJ and show producer to send us a 5-10 second PSA about their show to include in this routine.

We also moved all "handed in" shows, those that are not live in-studio, to after office hours, leaving the 10:00 am - 6:00 pm work day open to more new live DJs. The local handed-in shows have all been moved to the after work 6:00 pm to midnight block.

In the attached image, you can see the new line-ups:

• Shows in blue are live, in-studio shows during open station hours, Monday to Friday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
• Shows in green are locally-produced WMCB-first shows that are edited elsewhere and uploaded for the staff to schedule 6:00 pm to midnight.
• Shows in orange are far-flung productions that are produced elsewhere for many stations, of which WMCB is just one. These are also scheduled 6:00 pm to midnight, but typically don't get any repeats.
• Shows with a solid outline get a weekend repeat. Those with a dashed-outline, do not at this time.
• Shows on Saturdays and Sundays are all repeats of local (blue or green) weekly shows. Bi-weekly shows do not get a weekend repeat... they repeat in their own primary slot.

With this change, some shows lost a repeat (or two or three) while others gained a repeat for the first time -- all on Saturday or Sunday. No show will get more than one repeat. There are only 18 hours of typical listening time in a day (6:00 am to midnight) and so weekends should feaure shows that are new every week, for those people who would only listen to WMCB-LP on weekends.

Going forward, the weekend schedule will change from time to time as new shows come online and exhibit weekly consistency, and other shows fade away for whatever reason. New shows will get a weekend repeat scheduled only once they've shown a dedication to producing something new every week.

We hope all this comes as good news to you, and not too much of a shock. We know this kind of scheduling is a departure from how it was done over the past fifteen years, but the influx of new DJs and producers has forced us to open up the schedule.
